Description Japan de Hiraki Osam:

From the end of the Pacific War in 1945 to the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964, photography blossomed in Japan as the country underwent radical change. Documentary photography shifted focus from the hardship and destruction of war to the human will for survival and sense of solidarity. By the mid-1950s, Japan was at a crossroads between tradition and modernization, a moment fraught with contradiction, immortalized by the most talented photographers of the time. Chosen for both artistic merit and content, the 150 photographs featured are accompanied by essays from renowned Japanese experts who provide fascinating insight into this period and its photographic output, from both a historical and social perspective. The first comprehensive review of this period in Japanese photography, Japan: A Self Portrait offers a moving tribute to the nation's strength in the face of social upheaval and a rare chance to view the depth of its artistic talent. Hiraki Osam, independent photography critic and photographic historian, is Director of the Photographic Society of Japan. He is the co-founder of Kawasaki City Museum's photography department, where he edited and wrote exhibition catalogs and articles about the 1950s. Hiraki also co-edited the Japanese Photography Guide (Nazraeli Press, 1996). In 1998, he curated the world's first Pulitzer Prize Photography Exhibition. Takeuchi Keiichi is a leading expert in human geography, a branch of geography that studies the interaction of people with their environment. He is professor emeritus at Hitotsubashi University in Japan and was director of the Japanese Cultural institute in Rome from 1988-1991. His publications include Modern Japanese Geography: An Intellectual History (Kokon Shoin, 1991). Alain Sayag, head curator of photography at the Musee National d'Art Moderne in Paris (Centre Georges Pompidou), has directed several international exhibitions and has published numerous photography books.
